Hilux Lift Kits
Hilux lift kits are used to raise the vehicle's ground clearance and allow fitment of over-sized tires. Hilux lift kits are available in two basic forms: suspension lift kits and body lift kits.
A suspension lift raises the vehicle's frame (and everything bolted to it such as the body, bumpers, trailer hitch, running boards) away from the ground by doing any one or a combination of the following (depending on the year of the Hilux):
- Replacing the front and rear leaf springs with taller (or more arched) springs
- "Cranking up" the front torsion bars (1986-94 models)
- Lowering the front differential with drop brackets (IFS models)
- Replacing the front coil springs with longer or stiffer coils (IFS models)
- Preloading the front coil springs with a spacer (IFS models)
- Raising the rear leaf springs with lift blocks
- Raising the front or rear leaf springs with longer shackles
A body lift raises the vehicle by lifting the body away from the frame with spacers. These spacers are placed at the mounting points where the Hilux body is bolted to the frame. The thickness of these spacers determine the amount of lift that the body will be raised. This keeps the frame at its existing distance from the ground.
A suspension lift is recommended for anyone planning to use their Hilux off-road while a body lift is recommended for anyone that wants to make their Hilux look lifted with no true intentions of going off-road. This isn't to say that a body-lifted Hilux can't go off-road. It just may not perform as well as a suspension lifted Hilux because the frame and undercarraige haven't gained any ground clearance.
