Toyota Hilux 2.4 Engine
The Toyota Hilux was available with a 2.4L petrol and 2.4L diesel engine. The petrol version was introduced in 1981 as the 22R. The 22R was a 2366cc carbureted, 4-cylinder engine that produced 72 kW (97 hp) at 4800 RPM. The 22R was used on Hilux models from 1981 to 1995, though it would undergo various modifications to increase power and fuel efficiency as time went on. In 1983, some engines came equipped with fuel injection which changed its moniker to 22R-E. The 22R-E engine produced 78 kW (105 hp) at 4800RPM. In 1985, the engine was re-engineered to produce 84 kW (112 hp) at 4600 RPM. The 22R-E engines produced from 1985 to 1995 are sometimes referred to as the "newer" 22R-E as its internal component can not be interchanged with models built from 1981 to 1984. Also in 1985, a turbocharged 22R was available on some models which were renamed the 22R-TE. The 22R-TE engine produced 101 kW (135 hp) at 4800 RPM. The 22R family of Toyota engines have a popular reputation for their durability, high fuel-efficiency, and good low to mid-range torque. It's not uncommon to surpass 500,000 km (or 300,000 miles) in any Toyota vehicle with a regularly maintained 22R engine.
The 2.4L diesel engine was first used from 1984 to 1985. It was called the 2L. It was a 2446 cc, 4-cylinder engine that produced 62 kW (83 hp) at 4200 RPM. Other variations of the 2L were the 2L-T and the 2L-TE which featured a turbo and a turbo with direct injection, respectively.
